Canon M50 Mark II Review: A Comprehensive Look at Features, Performance, and Value

Hello everyone,

I am finally getting around to doing this review which has been long overdue. The Canon M50 Mark II has been my camera for over a year now. But before I get to this review I want to take a moment and give the lime light to my son. This picture was taken by him. While out on a hike I was looking for a bird I had heard on the top of the trees. As I was looking he decided to take out the camera I gave him and snap this photo. I am very impressed at the vision he has for capturing a special moment in time. I am so proud of him and I am excited to see his vision and progression in photography. I am hoping to save up money to upgrade my camera and hand this Canon M50 to him and see what he can do.

The Canon M50 Mark II my go to camera at the moment. In this review I will be giving you my thoughts and experience with this camera I been using it for a year now. I will first like to say I have not use any of the R series of camera from Canon but I know based on specs how good they are compare to the M50. So if you have the money I recommend going for an R8. The Canon M50 Mark II is priced at $649 with a kit lens. Is honestly the best price for such a well rounded camera. This camera has a digic 8 image processor a very old processor compare to what is in the new cameras which most have digic x image processor. This camera is UHS-I memory card compatible which again is very old. All new cameras have a UHS-II compatibility which is much better especially when shooting a burst of shots in one scene. This camera like many other have a build in flash. This camera also has an M mount which is absolutely horrible in terms of lens quality produced for this type of mount. Not quite sure what Canon was thinking of doing with this mount but they completely stop the production of cameras with this mount I believe after this camera. The upside to this mount is that is compatible with an EF-mount lens adapter. Which makes using quality lenses possible for this camera. EF mount lenses offers quite a variety of good quality build lenses. The RF mount though is probably Canon best at the moment. That’s why I say if you have the money just buy the R8. The canon M50 has an APS-C censor which just means this is a crop sensor camera. It is said that full frame cameras are better which the R8 is. While full frame cameras do much better in low light situations the crop censor can still work and produced great photos if used properly.

This camera has 24.1 megapixels which is great the R8 has 24.2. The image quality in both of this cameras are phenomenal. This camera has dual pixel CMOS AF. This cameras auto focus is great this camera has face detection AF which is quick and stays lock on eyes very well. However, the focus points are very limited but work pretty well. I find myself struggling to focus in low light situations but there’s ways around this issue you have to have to get creative with it. The AF points in the R8 have more options and are very useful as well but I think where the R8 gets the win is because this camera has subject detection. This setting must be incredible as I wish the M50 has this option available its one of the reasons I want to upgrade. This camera has a wonderful lcd screen which can be rotated it comes in very handy if you are a vlogger and plan to film videos in this camera. This cameras shutter speed 1/4000 to 30sec, bulb. If you are photographing a moving subject that’s well lit you will have no issues getting the photo is quick enough. This is a mirrorless camera so what you see in your lcd or EVF is pretty much how your photo will look when you go and hit that shutter button. This can be super helpful in situation where you have time to change your settings around and even in situations where you only have seconds having an accurate reading of what the photo will look like helps you make the necessary changes quicker. The other day there was a skittish bird I was trying to capture I started timing the amount of seconds I will have before he flies so I wanted to make sure I had my settings right before getting close enough to capture the photo. I put the camera to my eye and saw how the scene was looking and made the changes possible and the photo I capture came out beautiful. The more you play around with this camera the more it surprises you. For the price this camera is a must for anyone looking to save a bit of money on a great camera.

Overall, this camera is great for anyone just starting there photography or anyone looking to become a vlogger. Is a very great camera for the price. Even with all the negatives I pointed out I still think that as a photographer you should be able to create great photos no matter the camera. I have learn this camera and have customize it to my liking which has allowed me to get some amazing captures over this past year. Next week I am planning to do a review on the Rebel T100 which was my first ever camera and I will compare it to the M50 so you can see just how great this camera is. You should always invest in your lenses first any photographer will tell you that always. Lenses are what really bring this stunning photos to life. Yes extra options won’t hurt to make the process easier but learning your camera can uncover some incredible features that can elevate your pictures. I think when I do upgrade I will probably upgrade to the R6 Mark II I want to keep elevating my picture quality and this will surely help. I hope you have enjoyed, I enjoyed it so much I got to learn even more about my camera. Until next week hope you have a great weekend.
